CORNISH BREAKERS

Screenprint showing light blue waves with four pots of blue paint next to it

The first layer, a light grey blue with plenty of mixer for transparency

My screenprint ‘Cornish Breakers’ is an exposure screenprint (when the design is permanently exposed onto a screen with UV light until it is washed off with chemicals).

It has five layers, the fifth being the fluorescent sun (made from a paper stencil layer).

As simple as this print looks, the skill lies in getting the correct hue and tone of the four different blues. In addition to this, it’s important to get the correct transparency for each layer with a diluting mixer. Too little and the layers are too opaque, too much, and the colour is too translucent and the paper can buckle.

THE FINAL TOUCHES …

close up of a screenprinted wave which has seaspray on as white paint flicked by a toothbrush

The precarious task of flicking white paint to create seaspray is done with the paint loaded onto a toothbrush and flicked with my finger - hoping that the paint sprays in the correct quantity and direction!

The unpredictability of the seaspray as a finishing touch means that each print has a totally unique feel.

THE FINISHED PRINT

The finished print was a success, I’m pleased with the blue-grey hues contrasting with the red sun.

The finishing touches were to sign, date and title my print ‘Cornish Rollers’.
